MindHunter is a clubbing of fact and fiction. In fact, it’s based on a book written by an FBI agent John.E.Douglas about the interviews conducted by him and his mentor- Mark Olshaker on the most violent criminals. The book brings to light the functioning of violent criminals and how such knowledge can help solve future crimes.
In the series, Douglas is played by Jonathan Groff (Holden Ford), with a little more drama. A sum of MindHunter’s story concentrates on the change in Ford’s personality from a doubtful agent to one who drowns in the abyss of crazy by empathizing a little too much with his subjects. As a result, you even get to see his style and confidence change with each interview, which makes each episode a fresh package.
Moreover, the change of the air from the first to the last episode is what makes it such an obsession.
Why should you watch it?
Well, MindHunter has the vilest criminals spearheading horrendous crimes ranging from necrophilia, irrumatio (Ed Kemper) to the ones who like to shag off to a pair of heels or feet called Podophiles (Jerry Brudos).
Anyone who is aware of the above names cannot escape getting hooked.
Real portrayals of the questions asked by Douglas and Olshaker have been enacted, lending a creepily close connection to the real deal.
Plot, Pace, and Performances
No doubt, the plot is intensely raw to turn down. And as David Fincher is the director, a fiery build up of the characters is a sweet gift. The pace of each character builds gradually as can be seen in any of Fincher’s works (Fight Club, Gone Girl). Ultimately, you are left gritting your teeth with horrific wonder at the horrendous acts criminals are capable of.
